How stars are born［星の誕生］

今日は新生児室を訪問しようと思う。
Today we're going to visit a nursery, 

でも、君たちが想像しているものより、はるかに大きいよ。
but it's one far bigger than any you will have seen before.

星の新生児室だ。
It's a star nursery:

つまり、星が生まれる場所についての話だね。
the place where stars are born.



銀河には数十億個の星と、何もない空間がたっぷりとあるんだけど、
Our galaxy contains billions of stars, lots of empty space,

その他にも巨大なガスの雲があるんだ。
but also huge clouds of gas:

この雲は大量の物質を含んでいてね。
large amounts of matter,

そのほとんどは水素原子なんだ。
mostly made of hydrogen atoms.

重力によってガスが一ヶ所に集まるんだけど、
Gravity holds the gas together

時として雲の一部が、雲のほかの部分よりも密度が高くなることがある。
but by chance some parts of the cloud become more concentrated than other parts.



このかたまりの密度がさらに高くなることがあって、
These clumps can become denser,

雲から分かれて、巨大な圧縮された水素の球を形成するんだ。
separating from the cloud and forming gigantic balls of compressed hydrogen.

重力の影響によって、この球はどんどん大きくなり、密度も高くなる。
The influence of gravity means the balls continue to get bigger and denser.

やがて重力によってあまりにも圧縮されたために、
Eventually gravity compresses them so much

球の中心部にある水素原子が融合してヘリウムになり、
that the hydrogen atoms in the core of the ball fuse and form helium,

莫大な量の光と熱が発生する。
producing huge amounts of light and heat:

この球は、いまや星の赤ちゃんってわけだ。
the ball is now a baby star.







星の新生児室の中でも、最も有名なものの1つを、肉眼で見ることができるよ。
You can see one of the most famous star nurseries with your own eyes.

オリオン座の中の、オリオンのベルトの部分を探してごらん。
In the constellation of Orion, look for Orion's belt.

ベルトの3つ星からぶら下がるように、オリオンの剣がある。
Hanging below his belt is his sword.

その中心の星は、ちょっとぼやけて見える。
The central star of the sword looks a bit fuzzy.

というのも、実はこれは星じゃなくてガス雲、
That's because it is in fact a cloud of gas --

つまり星の新生児室なんだよ。
a star nursery.

宇宙では巨大なガス雲は星雲と呼ばれていてね、
In space, a giant cloud of gas is called a nebula,

オリオン大星雲には年齢が違う、およそ700個の生まれて間もない星があるんだ。
and the Orion nebula contains around 700 baby stars of different ages.







星にならなかったガスのかたまりは、巨大な渦を巻いて星の周囲を回りはじめる。
Gas clumps that don't get incorporated into the young star start orbiting it in great swirls --

こういう物体が惑星の始まりでね、そういうものも、オリオン大星雲では観測されている。
these objects are the beginnings of planets, and they, too, have been seen in the Orion nebula.

銀河のいたるところで星や星系が生まれつつあるんだと考えると、実にワクワクするね。
It's a wonderful thought, that stars and solar systems are being born all across the galaxy.
