I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.
本日は、世界でも有数の大学の一つとされる大学を卒業するみなさんとご一緒することができ、光栄に思います。
I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation.
事実を申し上げますと、私は大学を卒業していません。ですから、これが私には大学卒業に最も似た体験です。
Today I want to tell you three stories from my life.
本日、私は、みなさんに人生から学んだ３つのおとをお話したいと思います。
That's it.
それだけです。
No big deal.
大したことではありません。
Just three stories.
たったの３つです。
The first story is about connecting the dots.
一つ目は「点と点をつなげる」ことについてです。
I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.
私は、リード大学を最初の６ヶ月で退学しましたが、それから本当に大学を去るまで１８ヶ月間ほど、居座っていました。
So why did I drop out?
なぜ、私は退学をしたのでしょうか？
It started before I was born.
私が生まれる前の話です。
My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.
若い未婚の大学院生だった、私の生みの母親は、私を養子に出すことにしました。
She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.
彼女は、大学を卒業した人に私を引き取ってほしいと強く考えており、生まれた際には弁護士夫妻との養子縁組を整えていました。
Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.

So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?"

They said: "Of course."
私の両親は「もちろん」と答えました。
My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers.
私の生みの母親は、その後、私の母親が大学を卒業していないことを知り、最終の養子縁組書類に署名をするのを拒否しました。
She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college.

But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition.

After six months, I couldn't see the value in it.

I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.
私は人生で何がしたいのか、それを見つけるにどう大学が役に立つのかがわかりませんでした。
And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.
そして大学にいることで、私は両親が生涯をかけて蓄えてきたお金をすべて使いきってしまいます。
So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.
私は退学することを決心し、それですべてがうまくいくだろうと信じていました。
It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
そのときは少し不安がありましたが、振り返ってみると私がしたこれまでのなかで最高の決断の一つだったと思います。
The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
退学をしたときから、私は興味のない必修科目を受講することを止め、それよりもより興味を持てる講義を聴講し始めました。
It wasn't all romantic.
もっともすべてが良かったというわけではありません。
I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5 cents deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple.
私には寮の部屋がなかったので、友達の部屋の床で寝て、食料品を買うためにコーラの瓶を返却して５セントをもらったり、ハーレ・クリシュナ寺院でのおいしい食事をもらおうと、毎週日曜日の夜は７マイルも歩いて街を抜けて歩いて通っていました。
I loved it.
あれは大好きでした。
And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.
そして私の好奇心と直感で動き回ったことが、後にかけがえのないものになりました。
Let me give you one example:
ひとつ例を挙げてみます。
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.
リード大学は当時、おそらく国内のカリグラフィの教育においては最高だったと思います。
Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.
大学構内のすべてのポスター、棚に貼ってあるラベルは美しい手書きのカリグラフィでした。
Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this.
私は退学をし、通常の講義を受ける必要がありませんでしたから、カリグラフィの講義に出て、その方法を学ぼうと思ったわけです。
I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.

It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.
これが私の人生の中で実際に何か役に立つとは思いもしませんでした。
But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.

And we designed it all into the Mac.

It was the first computer with beautiful typography.

If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.
もし私が大学であの講義を聴講していなかったら、Macintosh は多数の書体や字間調整機能もなかったでしょう。
And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them.
そしてウィンドウズは Macintosh をコピーしたものなので、パソコンがそのような機能を持つことはなかったでしょう。
If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.
もし、私が退学をしていなかったら、カリグラフィの講義を聴講することもなかったでしょうし、パソコンが今のような美しい書体を有することもなかったでしょう。
Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.
もちろん、大学にいたときは、先のために「点と点をつなげる」ことは不可能でした。
But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
しかし１０年後に振り返ってみると非常にクリアにわかります。
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.
繰り返して言いますが、先を考えて「点と点をつなげる」ことはできません。できるのは、振り返ってつなげることだけです。
So you have to trust the the dots will somehow connect in your future.
だから、あなた方は、将来なんらかの形で「点と点がつながる」ことを信じるしかないのです。
You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.
勇気、運命、人生、カルマなど何でもいいので何かを信じなくてはなりません。
This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
道から外れていようと、いつか「点と点がつながる」ことを信じることが、自分自身の心に従う自信を与えてくれます。それが月並みな道であったもあなたを導いてくれるでしょう。そして大きな違いが生まれてくるのです。
My second story is about love and loss.
２つ目の話は、「愛」と「敗北」についてです。
I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life.
私は、人生の早い段階で好きなことが見つかったので幸運でした。
Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20.
ウォズと私は、私が20歳のときに、私の両親のガレージでアップルを創業しました。
We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees.

We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30.

And then I got fired.

How can you get fired from a company you started?
どうすれば自分が立ち上げた会社から解雇されるのでしょうか？
Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well.

But then our vision of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out.

When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him.

So at 30 I was out.

And very publicly out.

What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months.

I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton was it was being passed to me.

I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly.
私は、デビット・パッカードやボブ・ノイスに会い、台無しにしてしまったことを詫びました。
I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley.

But something slowly began to dawn on me -

I still loved what I did.

The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit.

And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.

The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.

It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
私は自由となって、人生で最も創造的な期間を迎えることができたのです。
During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.
その後の５年間で、わたしは NeXT という名の会社を創業し、ピクサーという別の会社も立ち上げ、わたしの妻となる素敵な女性とも恋に落ちたのです。
Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world.
ピクサーは世界初のコンピュータ・アニメーション映画の『トイ・ストーリー』をつくり、今では世界で最も成功したアニメーション・スタジオになっています。
In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance.
重いがけないおとに、アップルが NeXT社を買収し、わたしはアップルに戻り、わたしたちが NeXT社で開発した技術がアップルの現在の復興の中核にあります。
And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.
そして妻ローレンと私はともに素敵な家族となりました。
I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple.
私はアップルを追い出されなかったら、これらの出来事は何ひとつ起こらなかっただろうと確信しています。
It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.
それはかなり苦い薬でしたが、患者には必要だったのでしょう。
Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.

Don't lose faith.
信念を失ってはいけません。
I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.
わたしは自分がしてきたことを愛していたからこそ続けられたのだと確信しています。
You've got to find what you love.
あなた方も愛すべきものを何か見つけてください。
And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.
それは仕事でも恋愛でも同じです。
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.
仕事があなた方の人生の大部分を占めるでしょうが、本当に満足する唯一の方法は、その仕事を愛してやまないことです。
If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.
もし、まだ見つけられていないのであれば、探しつづけてください。
Don't settle.
そして立ち止まらないでください。
As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.
あなたがそれを見つけたとき、自然にそれがわかるでしょう。
And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.
そして素晴らしい関係のように、それは年を重ねていくごとに良くなっていくのです。
So keep looking until you find it.
だから探しつづけてください。
Don't settle.
立ち止まってはいけません。
My third story is about death.
３つ目の話は、「死」についてです。
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like:
17歳のとき、次の言葉をどこかで読みました。
"If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right."
「毎日、それが人生最後の日だと思って生きれば、いつか必ずそのとおりになるだろう」
It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:
これは、私にとって印象的で、それ以来、これまでの33年間、わたしは毎朝、鏡を見てそして自分自身に問いかけています。
"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"
「今日が人生最後の日だとしたら、今日しようとしていることは、やりたいことだろうか？」
And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
「ノー」という日が、あまりにも多く続くようなら、何かを変える必要があるとわかります。
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.
あらゆるものは間もなく死んでいくということを意識することは、重大な選択を迫られたときの最も重要なツールです。
Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
なぜなら、ほとんどすべてのもの、外部からの期待、プライド、屈辱や失敗に対する不安、これらは死に直面したとき、本当に重要なもののみが残るからです。
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.
死に向かっていると意識することは、何かを失ってしまうという考えに陥ってしまうことを避ける最善の方法です。
You are already naked.
あなた方はすでに丸裸なのです。
There is no reason not to follow your heart.
心に従わない理由はないのです。
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer.
一年ほど前、わたしはガンだと診断されました。
I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas.
朝の７時３０分にスキャンを受け、そして膵臓に明らかな腫瘍が見つかりました。
I didn't even know what a pancreas was.
それまで、膵臓が何なのかさえ知りませんでした。
The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.
医師たちは、このタイプのガンは治る見込みがほとんどないと私に告げ、長くても３ヶ月から６ヶ月の生命でしょうと言いました。
My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die.

It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months.
これからの10年間に子どもたちに伝えようとしていたことを全て、たった２、３ヶ月の間でそれをするようにという意味です。
It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family.
家族があらゆることに安心して対処できるようにしておくようにという意味です。
It means to say your goodbyes.
別れを告げるようにという意味です。
I lived with that diagnosis all day.
わたしは一日中、診断結果を考えていました。
Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.
夕方おそくに、わたしは検査を受け、のどから内視鏡を入れ、胃をとおって腸内に入り、膵臓に針を刺して、腫瘍から細胞をいくつか採取しました。
I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying

because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.

I had the surgery and I'm fine now.
わたしは手術を受け、いまはありがたいことに元気になりました。
This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades.
これが私が最も死に直面した出来事で、もう何十年かはこれ以上近くならないように願っています。
Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
この経験をしたからこそ、わたしはあなた方に「死」が、有益ではあるけれど、単に知的概念だったときよりも少しだけ確実性をもって言えるのです。
No one wants to die.
誰も死にたくありません。
Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there.
天国に行きたいと願う人々でさえ、そこに行くために死にたいとは思わないでしょう。
And yet death is the destination we all share.
しかし、「死」は私たちすべての行き着く先です。
No one has ever escaped it.
誰も逃れることはできません。
And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.
そして、それはそうあるべきで、「死」は生命の最高の発明でしょう。
It is Life's change agent.
それは生命の進化の代理人です。
It clears out the old to make way for the new.
古いものを取り、新しいもののための道をつくります。
Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.

Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
ドラマティックであり申し訳ありませんが、それが真実なのです。
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.
あなた方の時間には限りがあり、ほかの誰かの人生を生きて無駄にしないでください。
Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking.
ドグマにとらわれないようにしてください。他の人々の思考の結果と一緒に生きることになります。
Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.
他人の意見にあなた自身の内なる声がかき消されないように。
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
そしてあなたの心や直感にしたがう勇気をもつことが最も重要なことです。
They somehow already know what you truly want to become.
心や直感は、あなたが本当に何になりたいのかを、すでに知っているのです。
Everything else is secondary.
ほかの全てのことは二の次です。
When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generations.
わたしが若い頃、『The Whole Earth Catalog』という素敵な書籍があり、わたしの世代においてはバイブルの一つでした。
It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch.
ここからそう遠くないメンローパークに住む、スチュアート・ブランドという男性の作品で、彼の詩的な表現はそれに生命を吹き込んでいました。
This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras.
1960年代の終わりだったので、パソコンやデスクトップ印刷の前、すべてタイプライターやハサミ、ポラロイドカメラでつくられていました。
It was sort of like Google in paperback from, 35 years before Google came along:

it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue.
スチュアートと彼のチームは『The Whole Earth Catalog』を何度か発行し、そしてひと通りやり終えると、最終号を出しました。
It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age.
1970年代半ば、わたしがみなさんと同じ年の頃です。
On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous.
その最終号の背表紙は、あなたが冒険好きならヒッチハイクをするときに目にするような、早朝の田舎道の写真でした。
Beneath it were the words:
その下に、次のような言葉が添えられていました。
"Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."

It was their farewell message as they signed off.

And I have always wished that for myself.

And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
