Doctor Strange [Benedict Cumberbatch]

Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch

from: English Journal 2017 March

インタビュアー「衣装とマントを着けてドクター・ストレンジになった自分の姿を初めて見たとき、どう思われましたか?(When you first saw yourself dressed as Doctor Strange, in the costume and cloak, what did you think?)」

I was, sort of, giddy, like a child at Halloween. I just, it was the first moment, really, properly, and Alex spotted it, she went, "Oh you're having the superhero moment, aren't you?" "Er, yeah, I think I am."

そうした考え方は、映画にも受け継がれていますか?(When the comics were written in the '60s, various countercultural ideas, such as having an open mind and trying out new experiences, were very strong. Do any of those ideas carry through into the movie?)」

It's about mindfulness, in a sense. I think that's the common derivative which has carried through.

Culturally, we're still referencing that era. We always will. It was a very strong moment in all culture, in all pop and music, but, um, I think you have to reinvent the wheel slightly. You can't just replicate it. This is a film for now.

But I think, like Tilda was saying, the strongest message is the idea that you, with your mind, have the power to change your reality. And that's a great, wonderful, freeing egoless message.

And also you do that with the idea of doing it for the good of others, and you're onto a very, very good thing --as Doctor Strange gets to, by the end of the film.

57TH & 9TH [STING]

from: English Journal 2017 March

I don't take it that seriously. It's, kind of, fun being famous. I don't have a bodyguard or entourage, or I don't walk into clubs with massive people. I live a citizen's life. I'd hate to live in a bobble. I wouldn't like that.

I was lucky because I wasn't famous immediately. I was 26 before I became famous, so I'd had a real life. I was a school teacher. I worked in an office. I dug ditches. I had a pension. I had a mortgage. I had children. I paid my taxes. I voted.

So I had a real life, and I had this crazy life. I feel sorry for, sometimes, for people who go from school to being international superstars. That's a very dangerous position to be in without experience, without grounding. So I was lucky.

(You said they won't inherit all your money)」

My wife and I are both working class, so we had no money from our parents. And so we enjoyed the privilege of making our own lives. So, I want my children to have the same privilege. The joy of being independent is something I don't wanna rob them of.

あのような考えは、よく頭に浮かぶのですか?(In the song "50,000" on the new album, you sing about getting older and mortality. Do these thoughts run through your mind a lot?)」

そういうものです(the way it is)。

Acceptance of mortality makes you live in a more vital way. It's just, that's just the way it is. I think when you're young you don't think about it, but as you get older, you take this on board and your life becomes more valuable.

GRIT [Angela Duckworth]

Angela Duckworth

from: English Journal 2017 March

When I started teaching, I thought a lot of kids' success would be just how smart they were. And smartness helps, but it's not as important as I thought it would be.

It's not that talent is entirely inherited and grit is entirely learned.

Many times people from Japan or China who came to visit me tell me that, that people in those countries know a lot about persistence and hard work, but they're maybe lacking in something else, like passion for what they do.

My guess is that the Japanese culture is pretty good at resilience, and hope, and getting up eight times after falling seven.

I think one thing is that when you look at deliberate practice, it's not just about thousands of hours.

I don't think the message is, like, you need to practice longer or even harder, but you have to practice smarter.

That's why, in the book, I talk about the Olympic rower who was from Denmark, where he said, look, you know, when I went to Japan and I saw these kids, I mean, they practiced like crazy. But it's not smart practice. It's not identifying weakness, getting feedback, very strategically, thoughtfully, you know, working on how to make an adjustment to be better. They just put more hours in.

If you can think about perseverance in the same breath as you think about passion, that's why I like having one word (grit) to describe this combination.

from:THE HOMEPAGE OF MASAHIRO KIKUNO HANDMADE WATCHES

both here & there at the same time

from: The Economist March 11 2017

Strange but true

Quantum mechanics -a theory of the behaviour at the atomic level put together in the early 20th century- has a well-earned reputation for weirdness. That is because the world as humanity sees it is not, in fact, how the world works.

Quantum mechanics replaced wholesale the centuries-old notion of a clockwork, deterministic universe with a reality than certainties -one where the very act of measurement affects what is measured.

Along with that upheaval came a few truly mind-bending implications, such as the fact that particles are fundamentally neither here nor there but, until pinned down, both here and there at the same time: they are in a "superposition" of here-there-ness.

The theory also suggested that particles can be spookily linked: do something to one and the change is felt instantaneously by the other, even across vast reaches of space. This "entanglement" confounded even the theory's originators.
