Timmy' Blood

Timmy's Blood

Timmy and his sister Cindy fought all the time.

They fought over which TV show to watch.

They fought over the last cookie in the jar.

They fought over the bathroom.

Timmy was two years older.

He did not want Cindy following along behind him and his friends, hoping to join their games of baseball or touch football.

Cindy often felt lonely because he would yell at her and tell her to go back home.

They fought almost every day, until one very hot summer day

when their mother took them both to the doctor for a cough, and they learned that they both had the same rare disease.

They spent several weeks in the hospital.

Timmy slowly starting getting better.

Cindy, on the other hand, was only getting worse.

She became weak.

Her doctor said to her parents,

"You need to prepare for the worst."

But there was, the doctor said, one hope.

Maybe if they gave Cindy some of Timmy's blood --a transfusion-- his blood might help her fight the disease.

Since he had gotten much better, his blood must already have the antibodies she needed.

The doctor went into Timmy's room. She asked him,

"Timmy, do you think you would be willing to give your sister a blood transfusion?

This might be her only chance at getting better."

The boy's face grew pale.

His lower lip trembled.

He looked as if he was about to cry.

"OK, I'll do it,"

he said, fighting back tears.

"If it will save her."

Right away, the doctor called into the room the equipment and the staff needed for the transfusion.

Timmy watched, his eyes wide, as the red blood began to flow from his body.

He turned to the doctor and said to her very quietly,

"Doctor, can I ask you a question?"

"Of course," she said. "Anything."

Everyone in the room went quiet.

"I was just wondering.

How long will it take for me to die, without my blood?

And will it hurt?"

The doctor looked at his parents,

and all of them realized what the boy meant.

Timmy believed he was giving all of his blood to his sister.

He thought that the transfusion meant giving his life for Cindy's,

and yet he was willing to do it.

his mother said, leaning over to stroke his face as he lay back, so small against the pillows.

"You are not going to die!

Sweet boy, you really do love your sister, don't you?"

With her brother's help, Cindy did get better,

and from that point on, she and Timmy did not fight quite as much as before.

Timmy even --once in a while-- asked if she wanted to join in a game of touch football.
