Years ago, when I was still living in Istanbul, an American scholar working on women writers in the Middle East came to see me.
数年前 まだ私が イスタンブールに住んでいた頃 中東の女性作家を研究する アメリカの学者が 私に会いにきました

And/ at some point in our exchange, she said, "I understand why you're a feminist,because, you know, you live in Turkey."
会話の中で 彼女はこう言いました 「あなたがフェミニストである理由は トルコに住んでいるからでしょ」

And I said to her, "I don't understand why you're not a feminist, because, you know, you live in America."
私はこう返しました 「あなたがフェミニストでない 理由が分かりません アメリカに住んでいるのに」

(Laughter)
（笑）

And she laughed.
彼女は笑いました

She took it as a joke, and the moment passed.
ジョークだと思ったのです そして その時は過ぎたのです

But the way she had divided the world into two imaginary camps, into twoopposite camps -- it bothered me and it stayed with me.
しかし 世界を架空の 対立する二つの集団に分ける 彼女の見方は 私を困惑させ 気にかかりました

According to this imaginary map, some parts of the world were liquidcountries.
彼女の頭の中の地図では 世界のある地域は 液体的な国となります

They were like choppy waters not yet settled.
これらの国はまだ静まっておらず 揺れる波のようです

Some other parts of the world, namely the West, were solid, safe and stable.
他のある地域は ― 西洋のことですが 固体的で 安全で安定しています

So it was the liquid lands that needed feminism and activism and humanrights, and those of us who were unfortunate enough to come from suchplaces had to keep struggling for these most essential values.
ですから 液体的な土地には フェミニズムや 活動主義や人権が必要です そして不幸にも液体的な土地の 出身者である私たちは これらの最も不可欠な価値のために 闘い続けなければならないのです

But there was hope.
希望はあります

Since history moved forward, even the most unsteady lands would somedaycatch up.
歴史は前に進むのですから 最も不安定な土地でさえ いつかは追いつくはずです

And meanwhile, the citizens of solid lands could take comfort in the progressof history and in the triumph of the liberal order.
同時に固体的な土地の人々も 歴史の進捗と自由主義秩序の勝利に 慰めを見いだせます

They could support the struggles of other people elsewhere, but theythemselves did not have to struggle for the basics of democracy anymore,because they were beyond that stage.
彼らは他の土地にいる他の人々の 闘いを支援できますが 彼ら自身は民主主義の基礎のために 闘う必要はないのです もうその段階を越えているからです

I think in the year 2016, this hierarchical geography was shattered to pieces.
2016年において このような階層的な地域分けは 粉みじんになっていると思います

Our world no longer follows this dualistic pattern in the scholar's mind, if itever did.
私たちの世界は先程の学者の言う 二元論の様式に従っていません かつては従っていたかもしれませんが

Now we know that history does not necessarily move forward.
いまや私達は歴史が必ずしも 前に進まないことを知っています

Sometimes it draws circles, even slides backwards, and that generations canmake the same mistakes that their great-grandfathers had made.
ときに歴史は円を描きます 後滑りすることさえあります 曽祖父の代が犯した過ちを 何代にも渡って繰り返す可能性もあるのです

And now we know that there's no such thing as solid countries versus liquidcountries.
私達は今や固体的な国と液体的な国との 対立は存在しないことを知っています

In fact, we are all living in liquid times, just like the late Zygmunt Bauman toldus.
事実 私たちは皆 液体的な時代を生きているのです 故ジグムント・バウマンが 教えてくれたとおりです

And Bauman had another definition for our age.
バウマンは私たちの時代に もう一つの定義を与えています

He used to say we are all going to be walking on moving sands.
私たちは移動する砂の上を 歩いているようなものだと言っています

And if that's the case, I think, it should concern us women more than men,because when societies slide backwards into authoritarianism, nationalism orreligious fanaticism, women have much more to lose.
もしそれが本当だとしたら このことは男性よりも 女性に より重要なことです なぜなら 社会が権威主義やナショナリズム 狂信的な宗教に後戻りした時 女性は失うものを より多く持っているからです

That is why this needs to be a vital moment, not only for global activism, butin my opinion, for global sisterhood as well.
したがって 今はとても重要な時なのです 世界的な活動主義にとってだけでなく 私の意見では 女性団結にとっても 重要なときなのです
